The Nacho Story
Nachos started out as an hor d'oeuvre in a Mexican restuarant in the small town of Piedras Neigras, Mexico about forty years ago.
A chef called Nacho (short for Iqnacio) was creating various snacks and hors d'oeuvres for his guests one day and deep-fried corn tortilla wedges placing cheese and jalapena peppers on them.
As time went on, the tasty treat became known as Nachos in honor of its creator. Nachos eventually cougt on in all of the Mexican restaurants in Texas becoming a classic Mexican food item but up until 1976 Nachos were prepared the original way chef Nacho had prepared them which was very costly and time consuming.
Recently, the advent of pre-fried tortilla chips and prepared cheese sauce together with more specialized serving equipment have made Nachos a very popular and inexpensive snack item, with sacrificing the original qulaity for which the snack became famous.
