Tequila is a Mexican liquor distilled from the fermented juices obtained from the hearts of blue agave plants grown in the Tequila Region. The liquor gets its name from the town of Tequila located in the state of Jalisco where production started more than 200 years ago. The blue agave has long bluish green spiny leaves with sharp points and a large heart, called piña/pineapple from which the juices are extracted, fermented and then distilled twice, producing a clear and transparent tequila, referred to as Blanco or Silver .In addtion to Blanco, there are three other catigories of tequila:· Oro or Gold · Reposado or Rested · Añejo or Aged · Reserva Approximately one liter of distilled tequila requires between 6 and 8 kilos of agave pulp. Tequila is not distilled from any type of cactus. Tequila is famous around the world for its unique taste and bouquet and it is also the great mixer used in Margaritas that have become one of the most popular cocktails ever. Tequila Rose is a Mexican cream liqueur. It is a mixture of strawberry cream liqueur and tequila. The tequila is very subtle and really only gives a spirit flavour to the liqueur. The strawberry and cream flavours are predominate and this tastes more like a strawberry milkshake than a tequila based liqueur. Margaritas An early Margarita was made with Cointreau, tequila and lime juice. It was invented by Margarita Samas in 1948 at a poolside party at her Acapulco vacation house. Then there's the account of it originating across the border from El Paso, Texas in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico where Francisco "Pancho" Morales poured the first one in 1942, and yet another source tells us that Red Hinton, a bartender in Virginia City, named it after his girlfriend (Margarita Mendez) who hit someone over the head with a whiskey bottle & died in the crossfire that pursued. No matter what it's origin, we're glad it's here!
